The courage to say goodbye in business. How to make room for the next stage of team development?

I come from the world of sports, where processes happen much faster than in business. During my several years of working on the coaching staffs of clubs and national teams, I had the opportunity to work with hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Each team had its own specific characteristics, dynamics, and moments that brought it closer to success or effectively pushed it further away. Both positive and difficult experiences constitute a huge base of knowledge about what works and what, despite good intentions, does not bring the expected results.

Layoffs in business – a taboo subject that blocks development

In the business world, layoffs remain a taboo subject. Many leaders put off this decision for too long or, on the other hand, carry it out too abruptly and without reflection. In sports, the mechanism is very similar. I have seen teams that, due to a lack of change, fell into a spiral of stagnation and lost their ability to develop. I have also seen situations where, just a few days after a personnel change, the team functioned completely differently: with new energy, a clear direction, and real results. Firing someone is not always easy, but it is worth realizing that it is often the only good solution for both sides, leading to the development of the company, but also the career of the employee who has reached their ceiling with us.
